As a member of the plant management team, the Quality Manager is responsible for providing quality leadership and direction to achieve and maintain the quality standards and objectives of the organization.  The incumbent assures compliance to corporate quality policies, product and process quality requirements, management of the quality control laboratory, development of the quality technicians and collaborates with the plant management team to address and solve quality issues as needed. 

Position Responsibilities

Leads the effective implementation of corporate quality policies and standards to ensure that the final product meets the Company’s quality specifications and the customer’s expectations (20%)

  • Ensure the overall integrity and effectiveness of the quality system within the business
  • Provide effective leadership to staff, direct reports, and others in the Company to continuously improve quality performance.
  • Process control of raw materials in the pulp, silica, and quality control labs (such as surface area, freeness and mechanical testing results);
  • Conduct quality investigations due to process upsets or customer claims.
  • Coach and train employees through technical instruction regarding the Company’s quality systems;
  • Providing full and continuing internal and external audit compliance;
  • Providing timely and accurate data to the Claims and Quality groups to ensure accurate claims processing.

Manages the test lab and mentors laboratory technicians to ensure quality assurance and quality control of incoming, in-process and final product:  (30%)

  • Ensure that the lab technicians are complying with daily required testing methods;
  • Verification of incoming raw materials and mechanical testing of in-process and finished product:
  • Manage compliance with company quality standards and specifications
  • Maintain quality records, test data, product specifications
  • Manage an effective product quarantine system that does not allow the release of non-conformant material; and
  • Provide technical training in statistical process control, quality specifications, quality systems, quality planning and customer expectations.

Ensures the proper management of the Department quality personnel, oversees compliance with corporate quality policies and business objectives, conducts audits, provides reporting on quality performance:  (20%)

  • Managing and developing the Quality Technicians to ensure quality assurance and quality control talent within the Department;
  • Ensuring that the Quality Technicians are complying with daily required testing and color methods;
  • Filing quality records, maintaining Excel or Access databases to capture previously stated testing data, and acting as a custodian of tests, raw materials, and product specification manuals;
  • Conducting compliance audits of material processing, inspections, coatings and finished goods to requirements;
  • Provide accurate daily reports to the plant management team and monthly reports to the Corporate Quality Group on conformance and performance of the facility in:
  • Maintaining standard operating procedures for quality activities in the plant by operational personnel and Quality Technicians and conducting training as needed. 

Trouble-shoots daily quality issues by analyzing results of data collected to solve and prevent future issues by: (20%)                                    

  • Conducts analysis and investigations to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Assists with the resolution of customer claims;
  • Performs root cause analysis on identified issues using a 5-Why and structured problem solving approach;
  • Presenting findings from the analysis and improvement plans to the plant management team;
  • Solicits support and resources from the plant management team to find solutions;

Supports the Company’s stated key strategies and business objectives around execution, reducing delivered cash cost, introducing differentiated products and growing market share by:  (10%)

  • Collaborating on projects related to overall Company success e.g. marketing or branding changes, Research & Development (R&D) initiatives, new product launches such as “Linea” and continuous improvements such as “Zero to Landfill”;
  • Monitoring and assisting with the design and implementation phases of new process or product technology to ensure required specifications, process parameters, and capabilities are fully met;
  • Assisting with the qualification of new raw materials and raw material suppliers through in-plant testing as necessary; and
  • Supporting Lean initiatives and continuous improvement

Decision Making

The Quality Manager has superior decision-making skills as well as a collaborative approach with other departments including Operations, Safety, Human Resources, Quality, R&D, and Manufacturing support personnel.  The incumbent is responsible for the final quality of the product that is released for sale from the respective plant. 

Supervisory/ Lead Responsibilities

The Quality Manager manages quality control lab technicians and manages their overall career development through continuous learning and mentoring.  

Scope of Position:

Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Quality Manager establishes and promotes a safe and accident-free work environment.  The incumbent plans and coordinates quality-based activities and training to maintain compliance with the Company’s policies and provides assistance to other department managers to promote and maintain a productive and respectful quality culture.  The Quality Manager shares responsibility in reinforcing the Company’s initiatives and promotes a responsible culture at the facility.

 Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required:

  • Understanding and management of quality management systems and quality planning in a manufacturing environment (such as ISO, IATF, or other recognized quality standards)
  • Knowledge and experience operating a quality lab including conducting material verification, mechanical testing and analysis of results
  • Demonstrated and applied knowledge of statistical process control, use of Minitab software and application of analytical skills to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Knowledge and experience conducting quality audits
  • Demonstrated and applied knowledge of root cause analysis and a proven ability to develop and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Ability to provide quality-related training
  • Experience working in a lean environment
  • Demonstrated advanced skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, PhotoShop, Minitab, JMP, Statistical and other proprietary software).

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of paper formation process
  • Knowledge of industrial priming or painting processes
  • Industrial manufacturing background
  • Trained in lean concepts and practices
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and deliver sustainable and superior results.

Education/Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering Field or Quality Management.
  • 5 or more years of experience in a Quality Management role.
  • 7 or more years of management experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Preferred:

  • ASQ quality certification
