Position Summary

The Plant Logistics Coordinator is responsible for facilitating scheduling, production sequencing, inventory control, plant capacity management, and warehouse organization.  This position works across all plant functions to ensure that the plant can optimally service customer demand while minimizing manufacturing costs. 

 

Position Responsibilities

Maintains, updates, and develops current and future logistics analysis, execution, and reporting tools and processes to facilitate production planning, customer service, freight reduction, and inventory control by:  (40%)

  • Balancing short-term supply and demand to ensure that accurate SKU requirements are to run to hit key business metrics around service and freight in a 4-6 week rolling window
  • Updating the inventory management database and tracking to ensure inventory levels are closely monitored vs. plan and that obsolete/overstocked inventories are actively reduced
  • Extracting relevant data from SAP and other reporting systems
  • Developing analytical tools to manipulate large volumes of data using functions like pivot tables and other advanced Excel functions and Microsoft Access;
  • Synthesizing complex and detailed data and creating meaningful outtakes
  • Communicating 4-6 production requirements, performance metrics, and any ad hoc (NPI, improvements projects) to the plant management team & Central Logistics
  • Work closely with Central Logistics to ensure the plant has enough capacity to hit required monthly production targets

 

Creates and reworks a repetitive master schedule designed to hit key customer service, freight and manufacturing cost goals through optimizing labor and machine constraints (40%).

 

  • Maintains 4-6 week rolling manufacturing plan in run block format.  Works with key operations personnel to ensure that the plan optimizes plant resources and satisfies customer demand
  • Publishes 7-day fixed production schedule to all manufacturing personnel.  Communicates any changes to the schedule in a timely manner
  • Creates and publishes finishing run plan daily to accurately account for product splits
  • Works with shipping personnel to create and publish warehouse put away plan on a daily basis
  • Works with central logistics group on developing and executing manufacturing capacity requirements for the plant
  • Tracks, analyzes, and reports key scheduling and inventory metrics.  Uses these metrics to take action to recommend capacity changes, inventory stocking position changes, and plant schedule changes.
  • Proactively communicating with key plant personnel to ensure adherence to schedule and processes
  • Collaborating with plant personnel to develop plan of action for shortages, scheduled and unscheduled downtime to ensure high customer service;
  • Timely updating and communication of anticipated shipment dates on weekly shortage report to customer service for the plant
  • Following up with necessary plant personnel to ensure adherence to shortage commitments noted above and jointly resolve any discrepancies due to production, finishing or quality issues
  • Reviewing and responding to logistics requests for expedited/hot orders or sourcing exceptions.
  • Tracks and publishes daily/weekly metrics on scheduling, adherence, inventory, and service.

 

Additional project work required to ensure the plan improves in any of the following areas: (20%)

  • Coordinators with New Product Introduction Manager (NPI) on product launch requirements and ensures the plant meets all product launch goals
  • Works with plant controller and cost accountants to improve inventory accounting processes
  • Supports manufacturing improvement projects around constraint alleviation, incremental capacity moves, and general process improvement

Decision Making 

The Plant Logistics Coordinator requires strong decision-making ability to address day-to-day operational challenges and deviation from results with defined action plans and collaboration.  The incumbent’s decision-making initiative is expected to be independent in a high-accountability team environment.

 

Supervisory/Lead Responsibilities 

The Plant Logistics Coordinator has no direct reports, but requires a high level of collaboration with the Transportation, Customer Service, Central Logistics, and Manufacturing Departments.  The incumbent must have a high degree of accountability in order to report outcomes of his/her analysis and recommendations on a frequent basis to management.  He/She is also required to successfully communicate across all levels of the organization.

Scope of Position  

The Plant Logistics Coordinator spends the majority of his/her time on creating the short and long-term production plans for the site.  In order to accomplish this, the incumbent must analyze customer demand, manufacturing capability and capacity, and communicate across all departments in the plant to formulate a plan that can be executed.  Additionally, the Plant Logistics Coordinator will initiate and complete projects that provide benefits such as inventory reduction and manufacturing cost reductions.

  • Demonstrated advanced analytical skills with the various features of spreadsheets, databases, and reporting software to manipulate large volumes of data using functions like pivot tables and other advanced Excel functions
  • Ability to learn and/or apply knowledge of logistics reporting and analysis tools

Education/Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Science, Operations, or related field
  • Entry-level experience in a planning or analytical position
  • Direct supply chain experience (preferred)
  • Direct manufacturing experience (preferred)
