Are you ready to make an impact for a growing, dynamic organization? The Coatings Engineer develops new processes and improves existing processes for handling, coating and packaging fiber cement products. 

You might evaluate a new coating application technology and implement it while optimizing the existing coating processes (example: 1 vs 2 DRC’s in C+ or reduce color change paint loss). The most important aspect of the Coatings Engineer’s role is to design and/or improve processes for reliability and ease of manufacturability while producing products that meet or exceed customer expectations.

The role begins with pre-autoclave coatings application and ends with packaged finished goods.  It is the application of coatings and related preheating, curing and cooling requirements.  It includes substrate preparation: sanding, pretreating, machining and WIP and Finished Goods packaging.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Main focus on fiber cement.
  • Delivers manufacturing support and development.  For example:  Custom color line - product sequencing, paint yield, product packaging, and coating consistency.
  • Is operations centric, influences day to day operations and is comfortable on a plant floor.
  • Delivers consistent 5 and 6 sided coatings coverage with no coatings applied where not intended.
  • Develops test methods for online and offline use.  For example, DFT measurement using paper shim method.
  • Is a deep technical expert and stays in the role for an extended period.
  • Is a proven leader with previous supervisory experience.
  • Has an understanding of paint batching and paint yield, reduces color change paint loss, and reduces the amount of paint required to charge a line.
  • Determines how to make zero hit paint batches - understands the process and variation in the process.
  • Software proficient – above average, D4. Minitab, color measurement and batching software.
  • Is an optimizer of equipment and processes – improves edge/end coverage, eliminates paint craters (air bubbles) in a curtain coater and optimizes work off for leftover paint.
  • Is a trainer.  For example, educates operators, department managers and supervisors, other engineers on the fundamentals of paint yield.
  • Improves EP sealer application capability.

 

Education & Experience Requirements:

 

  • Bachelors’ Degree required, Masters’ Degree preferred.
    •  Focus on  Polymer Science, Polymer Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and Manufacturing Engineering.
  • 5 or more years of direct coatings application experience in a manufacturing environment – flat goods and profile shapes preferred.
  • Must be able to travel up to 50%.
  • Statistical analysis training and experience.
  • Familiarity with paint chemistry and formulations.
  • Familiarity with color theory and color measurement.
  • Project management training and experience.
