Position Summary

 

As an Engineer in the Research & Development organization, the successful candidate executes projects that will benefit Hardie from a durability, quality, new process, efficiency, and safety standpoint.   The R&D Engineer learns and understands various manufacturing processes within the business and utilizes this knowledge to interact with Manufacturing and various other groups to implement new solutions and processes for new product innovation developed by the R&D teams.

 

Position Responsibilities

 

Identify and resolve extrusion process and design related projects that will include new product launches, platform improvements, process upgrades that impact the quality and manufacturability of products (60%)

  • Support the development of new extrusion processes that provide a step change improvement in predictable manufacturing, eliminating process variability inherent to standard processes
  • Drive collaboration to generate the optimal extrusion process and subsequent curing processes for fiber reinforced active materials
  • Support and contribute to the development of processes for high solids dispersions and pastes, including new process designs, in an R&D environment that compliment high quality manufacturing of thick fiber reinforced products
  • Support and contribute to the Scaleup of R&D materials & formulations to manufacturing scale by running pilot scale experiments and manufacturing scale validation, including but not limited to designing and leading manufacturing trials in the plants
  • Determine necessary improvements to the plant processes by running trials and interpreting results to drive improvements in quality and production rates
  • Trouble shooting equipment and developing permanent solutions to address recurring issues
  • Network with other Process engineers in all plants to freely share and implement best practices.

 

Actively leads and supports the plant safety program:  (20%)

  • Demonstrate leadership in Zero Harm & Safety initiatives that keep both employees and the workplace protected
  • Apply 5S philosophy with R&D environments and all JH locations
  • Complete monthly OSHA mandated training
  • Ensure a safe work environment through good housekeeping and equipment operations
  • Promote safety culture by leading and participating in various safety initiatives

 

Manages projects effectively:  (20%)

  • Utilize effective project management skills to deliver R&D projects on schedule and target, as well as assisting and supporting other project teams or groups within the department when needed
  • Organize teams to help in research effort
  • Coordinate and implement projects.
  • Identify improvement opportunities
  • Work cross-functionally with equipment and process related counterpart(s) towards a common goal

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required:

  • Understanding of manufacturing equipment including extrusion processes, and design for ceramic based products.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive development projects via statistically designed experiments
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively take action to solve problems while exhibiting sound judgment and successful stress tolerance.
  • Knowledgeable of Lean, Six Sigma and 5S principles in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to act independently upon information and make decisions that achieve optimal results.
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals.
  • Demonstrated intermediate skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, and other proprietary software).
  • Demonstrated ability to think ahead and plan over a 30-day time span and prepare action plans to achieve results.
  • Ability to balance and achieve positive results in the areas of quality, productivity and cost.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload while paying attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a strong team player.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.

Education/Experience Required:

Education / Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (mechanical, chemical, industrial, paper science), advanced degree preferred with related industrial or R&D experience
  • 3-5 years of process engineering experience with extruder design or industrial manufacturing equipment design for ceramic based products
  • Experience developing and implementing process improvements throughout a manufacturing plant
  • Project Management experience
  • Minitab or other statistical process control experience preferred
