Position Summary

As an Associate Research Scientist in the Research & Development organization, the successful candidate will be a contributing to projects that will benefit Hardie from a durability, quality, new process, efficiency, and safety standpoint.   The Associate Research Scientist learns manufacturing processes within the business and utilizes this knowledge to interact with Manufacturing and various other groups to implement new solutions and processes for new product innovation developed by the R&D teams.

Position Responsibilities


Support the team in the development of extrusion technology process and design related projects that will include new product launches, platform improvements, process upgrades that impact the quality and manufacturability of products (70%)


  • Quick learner on technologies employed and being developed for thick fiber reinforced products
  • Bring new perspective and academic background to enhance the thinking of the group and challenge the teams to think outside the box
  • Support team in the development and scale up of materials, formulations and processes via lab experimentation, pilot scale experimentation and manufacturing scale experimentation
  • Bring new solutions to existing problems, including characterization methods, method development for testing and new processes used for ceramic and other inorganic materials
  • Aid in setting up statistically designed experiments to drive to fundamentals of materials and processes being investigated – brining latest tools from academia into industry
  • Participate in cross-functional activities to provide product leadership amongst technology, engineering, manufacturing, marketing and commercialization professionals

  • Complete monthly OSHA mandated training
  • Ensure a safe work environment through good housekeeping and equipment operations
  • Promote safety culture by leading and participating in various safety initiatives


Manages projects effectively:  (15%)


  • Utilize effective project management skills to deliver R&D projects on schedule and target, as well as assisting and supporting other project teams or groups within the department when needed
  • Identify improvement opportunities
  • Work cross-functionally with equipment and process related counterpart(s) towards a common goal

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Demonstrated ability in problem solving (collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in a timely basis).
  • Knowledge of technical risk, problem solving & decision-making tools (eg, FMEA, KT-Analysis, KJ Analysis, DOE, etc.)
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Project
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate and listen effectively at all levels
  • Self-motivated with high sense of urgency, resourcefulness and adaptability
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with different functions, including other teams within R&D, Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Teamwork spirit, continuous improvement and servant leader mind set
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.


Education/Experience Required:

Education / Work Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science/Engineering with focus on dispersions and/or paste development especially if coupled with high solids forming processes
  • 0 to 3 years of R&D and/or post-graduate, industrial experience in related field
  • Statistical process data analysis experience preferred
