Director of Transportation

As a member of the Supply Chain team, the Director of Transportation will be responsible for the performance management of our internal and 3rd party Transportation team.  Reporting to the Sr. Director of Supply Chain, you will drive the forward progress of service, cost and performance to exceed internal and customer expectations.  This person must have high business acumen and take a holistic approach to the transportation function and supply chain.  The Director of Transportation will present to senior global management and is highly visible within the organization.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the alignment of all transportation-related programs with strategic vision of the organization.
  • Provide oversight of logistics planning through financial review and containment analysis, demand/supply matching and transport activity review.
  • Research and create innovative carrier segmentation solutions for all transit modes, while also managing the carrier relationships.
  • Lead the integration of our warehouse and transportation functions into a unified, Lean organization

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead recruitment onboarding, training and development while hiring top talent to improve the organization.
  • Partner with internal Leadership team (Sales, Purchasing, Supply Chain, HR and Accounting) to maximize profitability, efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Drive teams to exceed performance goals against KPI’s while also Meeting all Deliverables for Customer Service Level Agreements.
  • Coordinate with the director of EHS to ensure safe, clean and sustainable operations.
  • Lead a culture of continuous process improvements and enhancements to streamline the business, increase speed and enrich our value to the customer.
  • Communicate often and effectively with facility teams and leaders on all issues to create an engaged work force.
  • Initiate and drive consistency for the operations function
  • Develop plans or set goals to reduce carbon emissions associated with storage or transport activities.
  • Monitor and track inbound and outbound shipments to insure customer and intercompany transport orders service satisfaction through on-time delivery.
  • Negotiate freight rates with Dedicated Carriers and Warehousing.
  • Act as a business point of contact for all 3PL warehouse and freight contractors.
  • Recommend optimal transportation modes, routing, equipment, or frequency.
  • Facilitate the selection and implementation of Dedicated carrier and Warehousing solutions
  • Statistical reporting on all key metrics and represent 3rd Party performance results at Month End & Period End
  • Continuous improvement of processes within and supporting all aspects of Logistics, Warehousing, & Distribution. To include network optimization and footprint analysis.
  • Facilitate and execute RFP’s as required to support savings opportunities
  • Identify, plan and manage the successful completion of process improvement projects that focus on high service and low-cost dedicated transportation and distribution.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOP’s) pertaining to service and performance of our 3rd party dedicated fleets and warehousing.
  • Ensure compliance to standard work processes by all facilities, 3PL warehouse and all 3PL carriers.
  • Work with Supply Chain Planning to identify issues and provide practical cost-effective solutions.
  • Work with Supply Chain Planning to setup inventory planning parameters to insure we have the right inventory at the right locations.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, or Business related degree, MBA preferred
  • 10-15 years logistics experience, preferably in transportation and warehousing field
  • Extensive experience leading and/or driving operational improvements and strategic projects
  • Demonstrated experience using SAP and linked interfaces to 3rd party distribution
  • Proven ability to identify and implement process improvement
  • Commercial experience in the areas of transportation management and or Operational experience (e.g. route planning, scheduling, dispatching, network optimization, freight costing) and performance management
  • Possess proven experience, acquired in a similar role in a fast-paced moving and growing company desired.
  • Direct warehouse management experience and success working with plant managers (Preferred).
  • 2+ years experience with SAP, Blue Yonder, and Four Kites (Preferred)
  • Prior experience in related functions such as customer service, distribution, warehousing or supply planning would be an asset
