Position Summary

As a member of the Legal & Compliance Department, the Director of Government Relations will report to the General Counsel in Chicago, Illinois.  The Director of Government Relations will lead external engagement with federal, state and local elected officials and other partners in the United States with a special emphasis on the elected officials and partners in the Company’s key markets and where we have a significant operational presence, including our corporate headquarters home state of Illinois.


Position Responsibilities

The Director of Government Relations will be responsible for the following:

  • Developing and executing a plan to proactively establish productive relationships with federal, state and local elected officials, ultimately establishing and maintaining a sophisticated political network.
  • Planning, coordinating and executing the Company’s government relations activities, including lobbying, strategic outreach to elected officials, events, message development, issue management, policy communications and thought leadership.
  • Developing strategies to positively impact brand reputation and key legislative issues facing the Company.
  • Engaging with and developing and maintaining communication pathways with senior management key internal to understand the Company’s key priorities and advising them on all matters relating to legislation and public policy issues of interest.
  • Advocating and working with external partners (trade associations, community leaders, legislative consultants, and other industry professionals) to progress and achieve the Company’s business and advocacy goals.
  • Develop and implement plans to optimally coordinate key outreach plans in key markets, including, but not limited to, lobby days, staff briefings and plant tours with elected officials, media events and informational testimony.
  • Analyze and assess proposed legislation's impact on the Company and its key strategic initiatives.
  • Help direct field activities when grassroots action is necessary to influence legislation.


Position Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience leading efforts for a Fortune 500 company or premier company in their industry, to develop and execute strategy in state/local government relations, legislative staff, campaigns and/or corporate communications or a combination of other education and equivalent experience.  Minimum of 15 years of experience working in relevant positions to gain proper experience base to build and lead a Government Relations function.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as an ambassador for the Company’s brand, leveraging significant political acuity and state / local government relations expertise and strategic planning capabilities.
  • Demonstrated strength in broad based communications, commensurate with the requirements of the role, including writing, presentation and relationship-development skills with a variety of audiences, essential to success in role.
  • Experience gained working for a global organization and work experience supporting governmental matters outside of the US is highly desirable.
  • BA/BS degree in a related field required, master’s degree preferred
  • Familiarity with building materials, home construction and/or retail home improvement industries preferred
  • Familiarity with consumer branded products and/or building materials is preferred
  • Must enjoy and be capable of working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-oriented dynamic environment with constant change and a focus on continuous improvement
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter and with strength in teamwork and working cross-functionally towards targeted outcomes
  • Customer service oriented
