Position Summary


The Director of Process Engineering will be responsible for complex process problem solving to drive continuous improvement in the pursuit of our vision for world class manufacturing.  He/she will need to infuse Six Sigma and other LEAN methodologies in the execution of the initiatives that will clarify cause and effect, resulting in the de-risking of these processes.  The Director of Process Engineering will drive best practice replication through all manufacturing plants and establish these for new capacity expansion projects.


This role will help establish and lead a team of multi-disciplinary engineers to ensure the development and execution of aligned process improvements.  They will work globally with peers to ensure consistent implementation of best practices globally.  It is essential that this leader work closely with cross functional teams and individuals from varied levels across the organization to improve the process capability in our network of plants, delivering improved safety, quality, and products.  This position will be based in Chicago.



Core Responsibilities


Drive towards disciplined and rigorous processes in manufacturing that provide standardization

  • Lead the development of the framework, methodology and approach to improve and standardize manufacturing processes, and systems, using Six Sigma and other LEAN methodologies
  • Develop and implement a best practice guide for key manufacturing processes, looking to standardize across all North American plants
  • Evaluation of current processes versus industry standards/benchmarks
  • Develop systems and processes to support accurate data analysis and reporting


Lead and coach a team of process engineers who are subject matter experts in key James

Hardie Manufacturing processes

  • Establish a multi-disciplinary engineering team across North American plant network
  • Train and mentor process engineering team members and plant process engineers


Provide process engineering expertise and support for business priorities

  • Commissioning of capacity expansion with high process capability
  • Work closely with operations and quality assurance to monitor and improve the efficiency, output, quality of products and safety of operations
  • Develop training documentation, SOP’s as required
  • Review existing data and interface on technical issues with others

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical Engineering preferred); MBA, preferred
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience, with a minimum of 5+ years demonstrated success in developing Six Sigma tools and frameworks in manufacturing environments
  • 3+ years’ experience building and leading specialized engineering teams in Continuous Improvement techniques, e.g. SPC, LEAN Manufacturing, Root Cause Analysis
  • Ability to develop and execute a Continuous Improvement strategy
  • Ability to effectively lead and manage decentralized team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze and trend data for accurate rectification action.
  • Systems Analysis – Ability to determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
  • Strong results orientation and a history of driving positive change with measurable results
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
