Data Architect

The Data Architect position will be a key member of an agile enterprise data group overseeing James Hardie’s enterprise information assets. You will partner with IT and business to support the continued growth and success of James Hardie in a robust and cohesive team. In order to be successful the data architect will need to demonstrate both business acumen and technological insight to execute our enterprise data strategy. Daily activities will include data analysis, logical & physical data modeling, and database design and metadata usage. This position reports to the Director, Enterprise Data & Analytics, and has no direct reports.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead or participate in gathering business and data requirements
  • Lead analysis of source systems, performing thorough Data Profiling and Data Quality analysis
  • Ongoing analysis of data requirements and development of appropriate logical and physical data models for both relational and dimensional data structures within the Enterprise Data Warehouse and other systems
  • Define underlying data sources and transformation requirements
  • Develop and ensure compliance with data modeling best practices and standards
  • Define and document the source to target mappings for data Integration
  • Document Metadata and Business Glossary for business/subject area supported
  • Data Management activities including optimizing physical database design for performance & performance tuning of existing data strcutures & SQL
  • Daily support of enterprise data warehouse, including optimization, data cleansing and security


Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or Information Technology related field
  • 10+ years’ experience as a data architect leading large scale data initiatives
  • Hands on experience in data modeling; logical and physical in both OLTP and Dimensional strcutures
  • Strong SQL (Structured Query Language) and data extraction skills – ability to extract and manipulate data from common data base systems (Oracle, SQL Server, Salesforce, SAP, etc.)
  • Superior analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience with agile style project management techniques
  • Ability to work independently or in a group setting
  • Strong business writing/presentation development skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to provide constructive feedback to management
  • Ability to clearly present written and verbal information to executive management


Preferred Experience:

  • Master’s Degree Preferred in Business, Information Systems or Information Technology related field
  • Experience with Cloud-based database implementations (Azure, Amazon, Google)
  • Good knowledge/experience with data governance practices
