		<title>R&amp;amp;D Scientist Job (FONTANA, CA, US)</title>

<br><br><b>Job Description:</b> "Position Summary 

The Research Scientist is responsible for developing new ideas/concepts into practical solutions and implementing them to realize the value of Research & Development (R&D) work for the business. The Development Scientist/Engineer provides mechanically based design of raw materials and new products, evaluates the designs, and provides recommendations for optimum manufacturing. The incumbent reports to a project leader or technical manager.

 Position <br><br><b>RESPONSIBILITIES:</b>  

As a Research Scientist, responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
&bull; Clearly understanding project objectives and expected outcomes.
&bull; Independently conducting experimental investigations for expected outcomes.
&bull; Key data analysis and interpretation with sound understanding and logic.
&bull; Making sound recommendations to management and the business based on solid data and business rationales.
&bull; Writing reports and delivering presentations to different stake holders at various stages of a project.
&bull; Coordinating and/or participating in pilot and factory trials.
&bull; Sourcing raw materials for experiments and trials.
&bull; Working with people from different groups and departments to implement technology, material or process developed.
&bull; Helping and supporting other project teams or groups when needed.


Utilizes mechanical/chemical engineering skills to generate new composite building materials using natural, synthetic, or manufactured raw materials through developmental experiment designs, formulation, and testing by: (35%)

&bull; Conducting literature survey/reviews through independent research in order to develop new concepts to develop improved, new, or differentiated products;
&bull; Using Design of Experiment (DoE) to design and conduct experiments in the mechanical or chemical laboratories to test for fiber cement properties. Such properties include, but are not limited to, mechanical strength, durability, and raw material composition. Testing consists of the following:
Mechanical testing includes a three-point bending test, inter-laminate bonds, cube compression, and impact testing.
o Durability testing includes freeze thaw testing and moisture movement testing.
o Raw material composition testing includes reverse engineering through X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray refraction (XRF), and Loss on Ignition (LOI).
&bull; Conducting research and testing to identify and isolate practical solutions to the known formulation associated with a process problem;
&bull; Working with a team of peers, engineers and scientists, to develop high-performance cement composites that result in the development of new formulations that have evaluated the feasibility of using raw materials and assessed the durability of the potential raw materials or products;
&bull; Effectively conducting data analysis, interpreting the experiments and mechanical tests performed on pilot trial results, and making recommendations based on the results;
&bull; Independently planning, organizing, and performing experimental mechanical/chemical testing on the cement composites samples; and
&bull; Making sound recommendations to management and the business based on solid data and business rationale.

Coordinates and/or participates in pilot and factory trials on new technologies and improved technologies by: (45%)

&bull; Independently planning factory trials through coordinating resources (both personnel and equipment) and coordinating the availability of raw materials;
&bull; Overseeing the organization and setting up of the DoE and on-the-floor analytical decisions based on the immediate outcomes of the trial and reporting the final trial outcomes;
&bull; Partnering with all levels of the organization to implement new technology, material, or processes developed to improve current products and manufacture new products; and
&bull; Sourcing raw materials for experiments and trials from outside vendors, developing raw material cost models, designing raw material scoping based on the shipping and vicinity of manufacturing locations, and documenting final raw material specification details for use by the manufacturing facilities as quality and formulation specifications.

Utilizes effective project management skills to deliver R&D projects on schedule and on target, as well as assisting and supporting other project teams or groups within the department when needed by: (20%)

&bull; Clearly understanding project objectives and expected outcomes through positive interaction with a variety of individuals within the organization so as to obtain all expected project deliverables in accordance with the needs of the business and within the guidelines of any established process involved in order to deliver the desired outcomes;
&bull; Developing effective plans for the projects/tasks at hand through effective project planning and organizing and interaction within and outside the team; and
&bull; Writing reports and delivering presentations to different stakeholders at various stages of a project.

As a team member of the R&D team, the Research Scientist is required to make key decisions in regards to their respective research projects that will have both immediate and long-term impact to the business.

 Scope of Position: 
The Research Scientist is responsible for understanding project objectives and their impact on the business; developing a project plan to accomplish the project at hand, making recommendations based on the data analyzed and implementing the results.


The scope of the Research Scientist position is broken down into five areas:

 Position Requirements 


 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:  
&bull; Demonstrated material characterization ability in terms of physical, chemical, performance and mechanical properties.
&bull; Demonstrated scientific yet practical approach to problem solving abilities.
&bull; Demonstrated hands-on ability and capable of setting up an experimental apparatus and rigs in the laboratory.
&bull; Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments while meeting deadlines and demanding quality execution.
&bull; Demonstrated project management and planning skills.
&bull; Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals.
&bull; Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment.
&bull; Ability to travel up to 20%, as necessary.

 <br><br><b>EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE</b> Required:  

&bull; At least a BS in chemical, mechanical, civil, or industrial engineering, or material science or chemistry, plus 5-8 years relevant industrial or R&D experience; or
&bull; MS in chemical, mechanical, civil, or industrial engineering, or material science or chemistry, plus 3-6 years relevant industrial or R&D experience; or
&bull; PhD in chemical, mechanical, civil, or industrial engineering, or material science or chemistry, plus 1-3 years relevant industrial or R&D experience.

&bull; Internal JH Research employees at least minimum of 1 year work experience in a Scientist III or relevant role at James Hardie.

&bull; Experience in the following area/s is preferred:
? Building products industry;
? Material property and performance characterization using mechanical, physical, and/or chemical testing/analysis;
? Formulation and process development; and/or
? Statistics and experimental design.

The Product Compliance Engineer, reporting to the Technical Services Manager, has <br><br><b>RESPONSIBILITIES:</b> which encompass U.S. (primary) and foreign (secondary) building code approvals, submissions, standards development and other code and non-code related business as it pertains to Hardie Building Products and compatible and associated building products made by other manufacturers. The Product Compliance Engineer is also responsible for monitoring the questions received and the responses given by the employees of the 'Hardie Technical Desk' and providing training and guidance as necessary. This position will be expected to work closely with all R&D product development teams during product concept and certification as well as interacting with the business development unit. The Product Compliance Engineer will also provide technical support in the form of design advice, engineering and guidance to the commercial and multifamily segments of the Hardie business.

&bull; Ensure that all North American compliance reports and product evaluations through regulatory agencies are current. Actions involved include: paying fees associated with compliance reports; correspondence with officials, arranging all testing associated with compliance reports, representing JamesHardie&reg; externally to these agencies.  Quantitative Dimensions 


Responsible for the Technical Services budget revolving around existing products. This includes but is not restricted to the following items:
&bull; Codes compliance reports - If this responsibility is not properly attended to the business may become unable to sell its products or participate in the most efficient means of commerce. This person has major decision making authority and steering accountability for Codes maintenance.
&bull; Product evaluation reports - If this responsibility is not properly attended to the release for sale of new and existing products may be jeopardized causing potentially a large revenue upset.
&bull; Standards development - This is a major responsibility of this position as standards development can establish a platform upon which Hardie, and its competitors, make, market and sell their products.
&bull; Technical support (commercial and MF) - This is a major responsibility to the Hardie Commercial Business, a large majority of commercial / MF jobs require customized design advice. Without this support there is a high likelihood to loose out to competitive products in the commercial segment.
&bull; 3rd party quality control - Of a more minor importance, control and management of the 3rd party quality control ensures that Hardie's day-today business will not be disrupted due to issues within the plants relative to QA/QC.
&bull; Engineering consultation - This area is also of minor importance and will help facilitate Codes, Product Evaluations, Standards development, and, may provide a customer satisfaction quotient when engineering consultation is employed to solve a JH produce installation or usage related problem.
&bull; Membership Fees - Of minor importance and proper attention insures that there will be no disruption in services provided.

Influence over New Product Development budgeting via consultation with Product Managers. The Product Compliance Engineer is the liaison with external testing agencies and engineers. Therefore all invoices are passed by the Product Compliance Engineer prior to the Technical Services Manager.
